The Static Pressure Regulating Dampers, Model SPRD, are barometric relief dampers used to by-pass excess air pressure on zoned systems. The SPRDs automatically respond to the air pressure in duct as the various zone dampers open and close. As zone dampers close off air to a number of zones, the supply air pressure in the duct system will increase. This increase in air pressure can increase the noise level and reduce the flow of conditioned air through the HVAC Unit. Using the SPRD solves this by automatically compensating for the excess air pressure by opening on the increased pressure and relieving the excess air. The SPRD helps maintain a constant air pressure in the duct system. This reduces noise that is caused by high air pressures and velocities, as well as maintains a constant volume of air (CFM) through the duct system. Maintaining a constant volume of air through the HVAC System keeps the efficiency of the system at its maximum. The SPRD is available in square/rectangular and round sizes. The following chart lists the available sizes of SPRDs and their recommended CFM capacities.
Calculating By-Pass Air Requirements: Determining the need for by-pass air and the size of the SPRD required is very simple. It can be very simply calculated by knowing the total CFM capacity of the HVAC unit (TCFM) and subtracting the CFM capacity of the smallest zone (SCFM) will equal the CFM of air required to be by-passed (BCFM). TCFM – SCFM = BCFM (Total CFM minus Smallest Zone CFM equals By-Pass CFM) Once the by-pass amount of air is known, use the chart below to select an appropriately sized by-pass damper. It is always recommended to have a larger size by-pass than having one that is too small. It is much easier to reduce bypass air through the damper or close it off than having to increase the size of the by-pass duct and/or damper. Location: Selecting a location to place the SPRD is very important for overall system operation. Ideally the best place for the SPRD is as far away from the air handler as possible and before any zone dampers. In an extended plenum application where zones come of the side of the main trunk, the end of the extended plenum is the ideal situation. The S1-MZS4 can control various types of HVAC Equipment all from the same panel. The S1-MZS4 features allow the use of single stage thermostats to control up to three stage heating and two stages cooling and simple heat pump thermostats to control heat pumps. The S1-MZS4 has various features that make installation and checkout very simple for all of the board’s functionality. The S1-MZS4 panel is made of sturdy ABS plastic and can be mounted to any flat surface. It is recommended that the panel be mounted to a wall or return plenum and NOT on the furnace or plenum where it will be in contact with the hot temperatures. The panel can be located in an attic space or in an enclosed cabinet of a rooftop unit, in order for the panel to not be in direct exposure to the elements. The S1-MZS4’s basic function is zone control. On a call for heating or cooling, the panel will accept the first call from any zone. Upon accepting this call the S1-MZS4 will open the damper(s) to the zone(s) calling, close the damper(s) to those zones not calling, activate the needed HVAC controls for heating or cooling, whichever is being called and not accept any calls for the opposite mode. Once all zone thermostats are satisfied for heating and cooling, the S1-MZS4 will accept Fan calls allowing Continuous Air Circulation( CAC) in those zones where the thermostat’s Fan Switch is set to ON. These zone dampers will be Open while the dampers to the zones where the Fan Switch is set to AUTO will be CLOSED. When all zone thermostats are satisfied for both Heating and Cooling, and all Fan switches are set to AUTO position, the HVAC unit will be off and all zone dampers will return to a normally open position. Once a zone calls for heating, cooling or fan, the dampers to the calling zones remain open and the dampers to the zones not calling will close. The S1-MZS4 is factory set for conventional fossil fuel (oil or gas) single and up to three stage heating and two stage cooling. The panel only needs to be configured when using with an conventional electric furnace or hydro-air system in order to bring the fan on with a call for heat, or when using with a heat pump equipment and thermostats. The S1-MMH3 Panel can control up to 3 zones and is capable of controlling single stage and two stage heating and cooling, as well as up to three stage heating, multi-speed and dual fuel heat pumps. This multi-function board uses any 4-wire thermostat. Two stage and heat pump thermostats are NOT required, however Heat Pump thermostats can be used to remotely control the Emergency Heat. The S1-MMH3 provides the basic function of zoning by being the central control panel where all zone thermostats, zone damper motors and HVAC Equipment wire. A separate 24 Volt, 40VA Transformer powers the panel and a separate remote Leaving Air Sensor is wired to the panel to provide protection and capacity control of the HVAC Equipment. When using dual fuel heat pumps an outdoor sensor is also wired to control the changeover between heat pump and furnace mode. When any zone thermostat makes a call, for either Cooling or Heating, the S1-MMH3 panel will take the first call, open the damper to that zone, if not already open, close the dampers to the zones that are not calling for the same mode and activate the appropriate heating or cooling on the HVAC Unit. If other zones call for the same mode, the S1- MMH3 panel will allow these calls and open these zone dampers until all zones are satisfied. When there are opposing calls the S1-MMH3 panel has an exclusive design of intelligent changeover that can allow those zones to satisfy or eventually switch over to the opposite mode. The S1-MMH3 panel can control conventional two stage heating, two stage cooling and heat pump systems using single stage thermostats. This substantially reduces the overall cost of the zone system by using less expensive conventional single stage thermostats. The S1- MMH3 has a built-in timer that once a call is made the timer begins and if the demand is not satisfied within that period of time the second and eventually third stage will be activated until the call is satisfied. The panel also has simple Light Emitting Diodes (LED) indicator to easily monitor the system status. Two LEDs can be seen through the panel's front cover. These monitor the basic system operation. By removing the cover, each zone has an indicator light to show when the zone damper is open or the zone is calling. The S1-MMZ3 Zoning Panel is a 2 and 3 zone, single stage heating and cooling control panel. This electronic panel provides the simplest zoning functions and works with all standard heating and cooling thermostats. The S1-MMZ3 panels are designed to use a minimum of wires to make zoning simple and affordable. Each zone uses a standard 4 wire (Y-G-R-W) thermostat. The panels also feature a separate C-common terminal for 24 Volt powered thermostats. All terminal blocks are color coded for each wire and have push-in connections making wiring even simpler with no need for a small screwdriver, as with all other zoning panels. The state of the art surface mount technology for all electronic components makes for a highly reliable control panel. The zoning operation is very simple and basic. Any zone can call for heating or cooling. Once the first zone calls, the panel will only accept other calls for the same mode, either heating or cooling. Once all of these calls are satisfied, or a maximum of 20 minutes elapses, the panel will cut off the HVAC Unit, purge the conditioned air in the duct system and then look for opposite calls. If opposite calls exist the panel will switch over and supply that mode for the zones calling.When all zones are satisfied for both heating and cooling, the panel will then accept Fan calls from each thermostat’s Fan switch. A two-zone expansion panel used to add zones onto an S1-MZS4 Zone Control Panel. The S1-MZA2 requires its own separate 24 Volt AC transformer. Sporlan RZE Series Expansion Valves The RZE valve is an externally adjustable balance ported TEV designed for R-410A air conditioning applications. This makes the RZE valve an excellent replacement for all OEM BI and BBI valves as well as other applications requiring a R-410A expansion valve such as I and RI valves. The RZE valve utilizes the KT-45 element design for the higher pressures of R-410A. This valve may also be applied in bi-directional applications.

Static Pressure Switch Model S1-SPS The Static Pressure Switch is used to sense the supply air duct’s static pressure and control the modulating by-pass damper (Models S1- ZDM or S1-RDM) in order to maintain the duct system air pressure. When used on a zone control system, the supply air static pressure increases as various zone dampers close down. The increase in static pressure can become noisy and reduce the volume of air through the HVAC Unit, if the static overcomes the rating of the blower. The S1-SPS controls this by sensing the increased static and signaling the modulating by-pass damper to open. As the bypass damper opens to relieve the excess static, the air pressure in the duct decreases. The damper responds to the control signal of the SPS. When the static pressure rises above 0.3”W.C., the S1-SPS will power the motorized by-pass damper open. As the by-pass damper opens the duct static should decrease below this higher setting of 0.3” and as it does the damper stops. If other zone dampers open and the static continues to fall below the lower setting of 0.2” W.C., the by-pass damper will close. The two setpoints of 0.2” and 0.3” and the SPST contacts for each, provide the control for the by-pass damper to truly modulate to prevent excessive static pressure in the system. The S1-RDM can be used for zone control or as the motorized damper for by-pass air when controlled by the Static Pressure Switch, Model S1-SPS. A 24 Volt AC, power open, power closed damper. The damper is simply inserted into rigid metal branch ducts. The single blade is powered open and close to control the flow of air to each outlet. The S1-RRM damper blade has a wide wiper seal to seal against the inside of the ducts. The S1-RDM can be used for zone control or as the motorized damper for by-pass air when controlled by the Static Pressure Switch, Model S1-SPS. It is designed to also handle high pressure air conditioning systems up to 4”S.P. The simple 3 wire motor has a Red motor release button that allows the damper blade to be manually rotated without harm to the motor.
